It’s generally advisable to avoid using metal utensils with a cast iron potjie to prevent scratching or damaging the enamel coating or seasoning on your cast iron potjie. Instead, use wooden, silicone, or nylon utensils that are gentle on the surface.

Our traditional range of cast iron potjies are oil cured which means they have no coating other than a protective layer of vegetable oil to prevent rusting and to help with curing during storage.

Our enamel cast iron range of potjies are fully coated on the inside and out, in a tough, durable vitreous enamel coating. Therefore, these products doesn’t need any treatment or curing and will not rust. To preserve the enamel coating and the potjies’ appearance, we recommend using wooden, silicone or nylon cooking utensils.

Yes, you can use a cast iron potjie on a glass-top stove. However, exercise caution to prevent dragging the potjie on the glass surface, as it can cause scratching.

To prevent food from sticking to your cast iron potjie, ensure that it is properly seasoned. Preheat the potjie before adding food, use enough cooking oil and allow the food to sear before stirring. Additionally, regularly maintaining the seasoning of the potjie also helps in creating a non-stick surface.

While cast iron is generally safe for use with acidic ingredients, prolonged exposure to highly acidic foods can potentially damage the seasoning of your cast iron and enamel coating. It’s recommended to avoid long simmering or storage of highly acidic dishes in your cast iron potjie.

To prevent rust, ensure that your cast iron potjie is completely dry before storing it. Apply a thin layer of oil to the surface to create a protective barrier against moisture. Store it in a cool, dry place, preferably with a paper towel or cloth between stacked pieces to prevent scratching.

Yes, cast iron potjies are well-suited for cooking on open fires or campfires. They are durable and can withstand high heat. Just be cautious when handling the potjie, as it will become extremely hot.

Apply a thin layer of oil to the potjie’s surface, inside and out. Heat the potjie in an oven or on a stovetop for about an hour and let it cool.
