Follow the steps below to ensure your new cast iron potjie is seasoned properly and ready for use:
Note: There must be no moisture left on the surface, as this can lead to rusting.
Note: Do not pour cold water on the hot potjie, as this can cause thermal shock and damage the potjie’s capabilities.
Before storing your potjie, remove any food residues by washing it with hot water and drying it over a heat source which will prevent moisture accumulation. Store your potjie with the lid off and with absorbent paper inside. Following these steps will help maintain your cast iron potjies’ quality and prevent rust.
To season a new cast iron potjie, rinse it with hot water to remove any debris, dry it thoroughly, and then apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the inside and outside of the potjie. Heat it gradually to allow the oil to penetrate the cast iron which will form a non-stick layer. Repeat this process a few times for better seasoning.

It’s generally advisable to avoid using metal utensils with a cast iron potjie to prevent scratching or damaging the enamel coating or seasoning on your cast iron potjie. Instead, use wooden, silicone, or nylon utensils that are gentle on the surface.
Our traditional range of cast iron potjies are oil cured which means they have no coating other than a protective layer of vegetable oil to prevent rusting and to help with curing during storage.
Our enamel cast iron range of potjies are fully coated on the inside and out, in a tough, durable vitreous enamel coating. Therefore, these products doesn’t need any treatment or curing and will not rust. To preserve the enamel coating and the potjies’ appearance, we recommend using wooden, silicone or nylon cooking utensils.
